<p>Tuttle wuchs in <a href="Roselle_(New_Jersey)" title="Roselle (New Jersey)">Roselle (New Jersey)</a> auf. Er studierte 1962 am <a href="Pratt_Institute" title="Pratt Institute">Pratt Institute</a> of Design in <a href="Brooklyn" title="Brooklyn">Brooklyn</a>, machte 1964 am Trinity College Hartford, <a href="Connecticut" title="Connecticut">Connecticut</a> den Abschluss des <a href="Bachelor_of_Fine_Arts" class="mw-redirect" title="Bachelor of Fine Arts">Bachelor of Fine Arts</a> und wechselte zu einem einsemestrigen Studium an die <a href="Cooper_Union" title="Cooper Union">Cooper Union</a> for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York. Nebenher arbeitete er als Assistent in der <a href="Betty_Parsons" title="Betty Parsons">Betty Parsons</a> Gallery, wo er 1965 seine erste Einzelausstellung hatte. Obwohl er Anfangs von den Arbeiten von <a href="Agnes_Martin" title="Agnes Martin">Agnes Martin</a> und <a href="Ellsworth_Kelly" title="Ellsworth Kelly">Ellsworth Kelly</a> beeinflusst war, fand er rasch mit poetischen Skulpturen, Zeichnungen und Objekten seinen eigenen künstlerischen Weg. Der Schweizer Ausstellungsmacher <a href="Harald_Szeemann" title="Harald Szeemann">Harald Szeemann</a> bezeichnet Tuttles Werk als „postminimalistisch“. Durch die Teilnahme an dessen legendärer Ausstellung <i>When Attitudes Become Form</i> 1969 in der <a href="Kunsthalle_Bern" title="Kunsthalle Bern">Kunsthalle Bern</a>, wurde Tuttle bereits in den späten 1960er Jahren in Europa bekannt.

</p><p>Richard Tuttle lebt und arbeitet in <a href="New_York_City" title="New York City">New York City</a> und <a href="Santa_Fe_(New_Mexico)" title="Santa Fe (New Mexico)">Santa Fe (New Mexico)</a>.
